An insurance carrier is not the same as an insurance agent.  An insurance carrier is the company which holds your insurance policy. It is the company that your monthly insurance premium payments go to and the company that pays your healthcare provider if you file a covered claim.

Each insurance carrier provides many different health insurance plans to choose from.  That is where it can be helpful to work with an agent who has knowledge about the plans and can help you pick the plan that is right for you.  That could be a choice between a silver, platinum, gold or any other plan.  Some doctors are preferred providers for certain carriers and not for others.  If it is important for you to stay with the doctor or doctors you currently use, it will be important for you to know about the carriers who cover visits to that doctor and choose a plan that is right for you.
