In our industry, this happens all the time.  People pay tons of money for health insurance coverage, and then come to find out that the plan they have doesn’t give them what they need.

There are some simple ways to fix this.

  1. Plan ahead for the future
  2. Research health insurance plans available
  3. Think about what matters to you
  4. Talk to an agent or someone who knows about health insurance

Plan ahead for the future:

You may or may not think that your ambitious five year old will break their arm this year, but what if they do?  Are you covered for that?  Maybe you are planning on getting pregnant.  Have you thought through if you need better maternity or pediatric coverage after the baby?  You can’t plan on everything, but it’s always good to plan for what you can.

Research Health Insurance Plans Available:

Health insurance plans change every year.  Whether a small detail or a big detail is altered, it’s good to be on top of this.  Just like you would research political candidates in an upcoming election, you need to look into the health insurance plans you are considering.  If you weren’t happy with your coverage last year, this is an especially important time to figure out what to change for the upcoming year.

Think about what matters to YOU:

What is at the top of your list may very well be at the bottom of mine.  Luckily, there are many different plans that can accommodate most if not all of your health care needs.  You may need a plan that covers a higher percentage of hospital stays.  You may wish that your co-pay was less.  Or that your co-pay was more but that was all you really needed to worry about.  It’s a great idea to make a list of the things that would be on your ideal health insurance plan.  It’s also a good idea to see what things you are happy to live without.  At the end of this assessment, you will be much better able to find a plan that fits your needs.

This is also a good time to make adjustments to what you really need right now, this year.  Maybe in the past you have rarely needed prescriptions but now you stop by the pharmacy every couple weeks.  Maybe you didn’t care about a dental plan last year.  Maybe you still don’t.  The important part is that you ask yourself these questions and truly evaluate what your needs and wants are this year.

Talk to an Agent or someone who knows about health insurance:

We love helping our clients pick the right plan.  The awesome thing about using an agent is that it is absolutely free for you to do so.  The only downside would be if you talked to an agent that didn’t know about health insurance about your health insurance.  So obviously, don’t do that.  We can help anyone, in pretty much every state in the US.  So no matter how much or how little you know about health insurance, get an expert opinion or at least another set of eyes to help you figure out if you are truly picking the best plan for you.
